_ MORE PLAIN TALK ABOUT VIRUSES__

I
f you missed our last discussion about antivirus protection and your internet security, you can review the full article in our October Newsletter Archive.

Here are a few of the most important comments that warrant repeating:

You must have a Firewall.
You must have an anti-virus
   program.
You must practice all possible
   precautions with your email
   (especially attachments).
You must consider every floppy you
get from  someone else to be a
   potentially hazardous  device
.

   TO Archive Index              Close Window

But, what can you do right now if you haven't installed your firewall and anti-virus programs yet?

Here are a few suggestions:

Get McAfee'e Search and Repair 'Stinger' program from their site. It's free, will fit easily on one floppy, can be used over and
over again to check all of the computers you use, even if they aren't connected to the internet.

___IMPORTANT NOTICE___
As of November 4, 2003, the current version of Stinger now checks for 44 viruses, trojans and worms. Get it from McAfee at no cost  HERE

And - you can download a free ZoneAlarm Company Firewall program from c|net  by
clicking HERE

In our October Newsletter, we listed some important things to consider for your "Disaster Plan".

Here are a few more:

First. and probably the most important.. be prepared! and if you haven't taken this seriously, consider the plight of one of
our friends who thought his computer was secure because he had installed a firewall. He was hit with a virus and we asked him

Which of these 5 serious mistakes caused your Computer  to be attacked? Did you --

1.. fail to immediately Delete any new
         suspicious looking email messages
         that got past your filters?

2.. take a chance that you could open a
         suspicious file  attachment without
downloading it to a floppy first and
doing a virus scan of the floppy?

3.. fail to manually initiate a complete
scan of your system at least once
         a week?

4.. ignore online Virus Scanning program
         updates from your  antivirus program
Company or put off doing immediate
system virus scans of your whole
         computer when you did update?

5.. ignore update alerts from your
        Firewall provider?

Any one of these omissions could have been the one that allowed a hacker to get into his computer and plant a virus or Trojan Horse. He really wasn't sure which one, but was certain that it he wouldn't let it happen again.

Invasion by hackers is not the only way that viruses are planted. Even email from friends and family can provide a serious threat...

and that's why it's so important to be vigilant and protect your computer, and your peace of mind, by installing and maintaining
adequate firewalls and up-to-date virus scanning programs.

But, what about SPAM? You bet! It's a serious threat! If you don't know who sent it, consider Serious Mistake 1 and 2 above.

Also, you should at least set the filters of your email program to reject or defer undesirable email because it could definitely
be the carrier of bad news and serious consequences.

Nearly all of the most popular email services and ISP's have effective SPAM filters. Sometimes they are too effective and stop
email that you really want to read. Most of these anti-spam programs can be trained (taught) to recognize what is
acceptable for you.

Companies like McAfee, etc, provide Complete Security Centers that include Personal Firewalls, Antivirus programs, Spam Killers and Privacy protection... see the list of  McAfee's programs HERE

We suggest that you take another look at our "What's a Firewall?" Report. We update it regularly.

Remember, virus infections could happen to you.  If you haven't had any problems -- congratulations! Continue you vigilance and
help your family and friends avoid virus infections,...

Our personal policy is to be suspicious of strange email messages, expect the worst, delete unless we know the source....and sometimes this doesn't even work.

And why not help your friends maintain maximum security for their computers by forwarding a copy of this message to them. Change the subject line so that they will recognize that the message comes from you.

We thank you, and we're confident that they will, too.

They can even register for their own copy of our monthly ALERT summaries by sending
a blank email to Richard

In future discussions, we'll talk more about
Disaster Planning, Remote (Server Side) backup, current virus updates, and new security tools.

PS. Are you tired of SPAM? It seems that everyone is asking that question, especially those of us that attempt to provide helpful tips, tools and related information to our readers.

We do not send SPAM... and to be certain that your ISP doesn't accidently cancel out this message, we tested it first with the Free SPAM Checker by SiteSell.

You can use it, too. Get all of the details at:

A Note of Interest: To combat the resource-destroying spam problems, ISPs and individuals are using filters in record numbers. Some of  these are defective and sometimes mark and delete email you actually want.

To continue receiving our ALERTS, please put Richard@Richardpresents.com on the white list of each spam filter you are using. Ask your ISP to do so, too.

We thank you.
